If we're all here, who's taking care of everyone?

That is the question we always chuckle about at each ACOG meeting! Every quarter, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Indiana section, hosts a day long meeting at the Ritz Charles in Carmel, IN. The meetings are more like mini lectures and updates on research going over anything and everything in OB, Gyn, Infertility and Women's Health, so, as the title suggests, almost every OB-Gyn & WHNP in the Indy area attends, so we all kinda giggle that no one is in the office to see patients. As a student, it's a great way to network and meet other NP's & MD's in the field as well as staying current on practice guidelines and research. Yesterday's meeting focused on breast cancer updates, IVF, ovulation induction and treatment of PCOS.

Another big part of the day is the vendor fair, with drug & sales reps in the women's health arena. We see most of them at the office, but usually we're so rushed for time during the day that we don't really get to talk with the reps much. Now, I'm not big on the idea of swag and all the freebies that are given away, but I do like to pick up literature and anything having to do with provider & patient education. I will admit, I grabbed about 8 pens, a purse mirror, some mints and a mini-mag light from the reps, but what I was so happy to get was the 6th edition of the OB-Gyn-Infertility Handbook for Clinicians and the most recent copy of Contemporary guide to Contraception (books that would normally go for $20-$30) from the reps and....

My own Implanon patient education sample! The little white rod you see just below the Implanon text, is the same size & shape as the real implanon that can be inserted under the skin for 3 years of continuous birth control. The flesh colored oval is to simulate what it would feel like to have it inserted.

And, here is my very own Nuva Ring patient education sample! It's so great to have these tools to use when talking to patients about their contraceptive options, and it made me feel very "official" to be given my own by the drug reps!

The best part of the day though, was going to lunch with my Gyn preceptor, Allison, and two other WHNP's in the community. It was so wonderful to have some fellowship time with such strong and intelligent women...they are so amazing and inspirational!

I always wondered what the NuvaRing actually looked like...

Dawn~

The picture doesn't really give you a good idea of the size/scale of the ring, but it's very slender & small. We can actually do paps when patients still have their ring in!
