Pediatrician Report

Yesterday was Owen's 1 month well-baby visit with Dr. Riddell and things went well! Here are his current stats:
  • Weight 8lbs 12 oz * up from a birth weight of 6lbs 5oz
  • Length 21 1/4 inches * up from 19 1/2 inches at delivery
  • Head circumference 36 1/2 cm * up from 34 1/4 cm at delivery
When Owen was born, he was in the 15th percentile for growth - however, this was his unadjusted measurements for being born at 35wks...and after yesterday, all 3 of his measurements put him in the 25th percentile for growth (again unadjusted measurements), which is EXCELLENT progress and show that our sweet little son is thriving and growing well.

We did decide to make some changes with Owen's feedings to try and help a bit more with his colic & gas issues. After talking with Dr. Riddell we're switching to the Dr. Brown's bottles, which are suppose to help reduce gas & air intake during feeds AND we're going to try the Enfamil Gentlease formula because it's still partially broken down milk proteins to be easy on Owen's tummy, but it's much less expensive. Dr. Riddell told us a few other optional things we could try - adding a very small amount of rice cereal to his formula and trying Zantac drops because we know that Owen has a touch of reflux going on...however, Cory and I aren't convinced that reflux is the main "problem" and we know that this is something that the majority of premies have (to some degree) and will grow out of. We would rather not go straight to meds for Owen, so we're going to try some less invasive changes first. We're also going to hold off on the rice cereal so we can see if the formula & new bottles help at all - I don't want to make too many changes at once for Owen.

So today, Owen is going to be hanging out with his Gma & Gpa Albert here at the house and I'm going to try and get some work done on his room - our friends & family have been BEYOND generous to Owen and have showered him with lots of new clothes and fabulous baby items, so I need to get to work on sorting, putting away and clearing out the clutter that has accumulated because I know one day Owen will be sleeping in that room....maybe not for a few more months as he prefers the mattress like quality of mommy & daddy's chests (ha!).

Yay! So glad Owen got a great report! We use Dr. Brown's and love them! Riley also had bad gas, like to the point where thought we were going to have to have an arranged marriage for her. It was quite embarassing, but the Dr. Brown's definitely helped and she eventually outgrew it! (for the most part- she can still clear a room on occassion!) :) I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out with the new bottles and formula and Owen continues to thrive!
